Oliver Clare

(1853 - 1927)

Oliver Clare was born in 1853. He was a painter of still life subjects, mainly fruit, operative in London in the late 19th Century. Though there are no records as to where he received his training, one can be quite certain that most, if not all, of it was from his father - his stippling technique and choice of subject matter are almost identical.

Both this artist and George Clare are members of the same family and both had the distinction of painting designs for chinaware made in the potteries of England.  This is one reason why whole collections of these artists’ works can still occasionally be found in the possession of older families.

Between 1873 and 1883 he exhibited in London, having one painting shown at the Royal Academy and two at Suffolk Street.
